Time is the enemy.
This week the LDN crew met up at 1Xtra Towers once again for the penultimate session before it all begins. And it was time for a recap as we brought together the skills and knowledge from every session thus far. So, in two groups with an elected producer for each we set about our task of the session, which, this week was to produce 30 minutes of pre-recorded daytime radio. Presenters? Check. Playlist? Check. Station sounds? Check.
For the group, this task really brought home what this training was all about. Making radio is challenging, a bit stressful but unbelievable amounts of fun. T’was great to have this mock session because it allowed us to gauge what our strengths and weaknesses are. On Friday, more than ever, it was apparent just how crucial the element of time is in radio. As our Kath says, “time is the enemy” - and it is important for us to work out how to get this particular enemy on side.
We also spent some of the session learning about editorial policy. It was interesting to learn that this is not a set of rules but guidelines, and how editorial justification is a tool used to unhinder creativity. Here, the main lesson learned was that because of the unique way that the BBC is paid for, the public do not take being offended lightly.
Gosh, I could go on about all the little things that we think are cool and interesting about radio but we’d really be here all day! So we’ll leave y’all with this - you guys, our audience, are in for a real treat.
